This fast-growing shrub is a great addition to a native hedgerow. In early summer, it produces beautiful lace-like flowers that can been used to make cordials or syrups. After being pollinated, these flowers turn to berries that ripen into a deep purple (almost black) color. At this stage, the berries can be used to make syrups which have a long history of being used medicinally to help promote the immune system and fend off colds.
Please note: All other parts (leaves, stems, roots) of the elderberry are mildly toxic, and the berries require cooking before being eaten. Make sure to have a positive ID and do your own research before eating!
