Tall Larkspur is a lush, clump-forming perennial wildflower that enjoys moist soils and woodland edges. It has attractive, unique palmate leaves with deep lobes. It blooms later than many other Delphiniums, sending up tall stalks adorned with purple flowers in late summer. Over time, the main rootstock will produce additional crowns, increasing the number of flower stalks. This plant is especially attracted when planted en masse alongside other perennials like Culver's Root (Veronicastrum virginicum).

The flowers are attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. It serves as a larval host plant for the Disjunct Looper (Polychrysia morigera) and at least 10 other species of moths and butterflies. It is toxic to many mammals, so deer and rabbits tend to leave this plant alone.
