Cardinal Flower is a short-lived clump-forming perennial that produces some of the most vibrant red flowers of our native plants. Often found growing along the edges of water, it's happiest in moist soils and can adapt to a range of sunlight conditions. However, it will perform in average garden conditions as well, especially if given a bit of shade; the more sunlight it receives, the more moisture it needs. If planted in a good spot, it will self-seed and can even form a small colony.

With such showy red flowers, it's no surprise that Cardinal Flower attracts hummingbirds, and this late-season nectar source is a welcome treat before their migration south. Hummingbirds are the primary pollinator for the Cardinal Flower, but the long, tubular flowers also attract butterflies. The seeds that follow are enjoyed by song birds in the fall and winter. While typically a deer resistant plant due to it's toxicity and taste, it may still be browsed in areas of high deer pressure.
