Wild Geranium is a woodland native with attractive, deep-lobed leaves and delightful lavender flowers. It blooms in the spring, providing an early food source for pollinators, and then goes to seed. As the seedpods dry, they eject the seeds. When planted in a suitable spot Wild Geranium will readily self-seed, filling out spaces to form nice little colonies. It prefers moist, rich soils in part shade, but it can also tolerate more sun provided the soil remains moist. During hot, dry summers, the foliage may show signs of stress, especially in sunnier locations.
Wild Geranium attracts many pollinators, especially native bees, and it serves as a larval host plant for over 25 species of moths and caterpillars. Deer will eat the leaves of this plant, so protection may be necessary.
