Whorled Tickseed (or Threadleaf Tickseed) is a vigorous perennial with an overall feathery, airy appearance. It performs best in full sun and in poor, dry soils; in richer soils, it has a tendency to flop. It spreads via rhizome and by self-seeding. This is a great plant for a large area that receives harsh sunlight. This plant will grow well alongside native warm-season grasses like Little Bluestem, Switchgrass, and Purple Lovegrass.
Whorled Tickseed has a relatively long bloom-time and attracts many pollinators. It also serves as a larval host plant for several species of moths and butterflies. The seeds are enjoyed by songbirds, including goldfinches. It is typically avoided by deer, though they may nip at it if food is scarce.
