Blue Mistflower is a member of the Asteraceae family that produces profuse purple flowers late into summer and into fall. It prefers rich, moist soils, and it will happily spread when planted in an ideal location. However, I have also found it to be quite adaptable, and it grows just fine in a drier area in my yard. You may choose to deliberately plant it in a drier spot to help control its spreading tendencies.

It has an incredibly long bloom time, from late summer into the fall. The nectar is enjoyed by all kinds of butterflies, and it’s especially important for monarchs as they prepare for their migration to the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico. Several moth species also use it as a host plant, including the lined Ruby Tiger and Clymene moths. It has bitter leaves that deer do not enjoy, though they may browse them if hungry enough.
