Downy Wood Mint is a clump-forming perennial that slowly spreads via rhizomes to form small colonies. Despite the name, it prefers full to part sun and dry-average soils, though it can tolerate a little more shade as well. Too much shade, however, may increase the likelihood of powder mildew. It blooms in early summer, with lavender-purple flowers similar to a miniature Monarda. Its compact size and adaptability make it an easy addition to most native plantings.
Like other members of the mint family, the flowers attract many pollinators, and deer and other herbivores tend to avoid it.
