Swamp Milkweed is a clump-forming perennial commonly found on wet sites, though it can adapt to more average conditions typical for many gardens. It is sometimes called "Rose Milkweed" due to its fragrant, pink flowers. After blooming, the plant produces attractive seedheads that, once dry split open to release silky-haired seeds that float away on the wind.

Like all Milkweeds, Swamp Milkweed produces a milky sap that many herbivores do not enjoy, and it serves as a larval host plant for the endangered Monarch caterpillars, among others. The flowers attract many pollinators, including bees, wasps, butterflies, moths, and even the occasional hummingbird. Oleander aphids can be a pest, though they rarely cause lasting harm. It is recommended not to use herbicide, however, as this plant attracts many insects that could also be affected.
