Monkshood is a unique perennial with deep, bluish-purple flowers that resemble-- you guessed it-- a monk's hood. Both the color and shape of the flowers add late-season interest to cool, shady, moist spots. While not a vine, the thin stems are weak and will weave themselves around other perennials and shrubs for additional support, or, if nothing tall is nearby, they will ramble along the ground.
Monkshood is incredibly poisonous, and it is recommended for gardeners to wear gloves when working with this plant. Its toxicity is also what makes it resistant to browsing by deer and other herbivores. The flowers attract pollinators, particularly native bees.
